Plans Being Finalized for New Aquatic Centre in East Hants
(Elmsdale, Nova Scotia) September 26, 2017 – Excitement is building in East Hants as plans move toward the construction of a new Aquatic Centre in Elmsdale, set to open in the summer of 2019.
First announced in 2015, the project is nearing the tendering stage followed by a construction start in April 2018. Over the past several months, the Municipality has been working with an integrated design team led by MacLennan Jaunkalns Miller Architects in association with TEAL Architects+Planners to finalize the components to be included in the Aquatic Centre, as well as the design of the interior and exterior of the facility.
The Aquatic Centre will include a six-lane, 25-metre lap pool, an accessible leisure spray pool, a lazy river and other components such as an outdoor splash pad, a slide and a multi-purpose room.
“Infrastructure represents the foundation of any community and it is our goal to provide infrastructure that addresses the needs of our growing community,” says Municipality of East Hants Warden Jim Smith. “Upon completion, the centre will give residents from across the region increased options for year-round aquatic programming and recreational activities. Our team has been working diligently to ensure that the new facility will be efficient, accessible to all and a place of which we can all be proud.”
The Centre is designed so that toddlers, children, seniors and people of all ages and abilities can enjoy it. It will host a variety of aquatic and non-aquatic programs and be a hub for the community, all contributing to the health and wellness, social and physical well-being of residents of East Hants. Its close proximity to the Lloyd E. Matheson Centre aligns well with local programming offered by the municipality, the Colchester-East Hants Public Library and Nova Scotia Public Health.
“We have listened to East Hants residents and incorporated as many of their hopes and dreams for this facility as possible within our budget. Our goal is to design a facility that is known as a place for fun, fitness and friendship,” says Kate Friars, Director of Parks, Recreation and Culture for the municipality.
One of the largest infrastructure builds in East Hants history, the Aquatic Centre will cost $19 million with the Government of Canada contributing $5.8 million and the Municipality of East Hants providing $13.2 million of funding.
