Waste Reduction Education Intern



Location: Elmsdale, NS

The Waste Reduction Education Intern will be mainly responsible for waste reduction activities including: conducting waste audits with the Waste Compliance Officer, representing the municipality by providing public education sessions to residents on proper sorting and program information, conducting litter intervention programs. The goal of the position to to increase public awareness on proper sorting requirements, provide data collection related to participation levels, and support various litter intervention projects. The position will be a combination of in-office work and field work. The successful candidate needs to have comfort in using a variety of computer applications (Microsoft). Experience in public education or presenting is considered an asset (ex. volunteering, school, employment).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide education to various age groups on waste reduction programming
  • Provide support to the Waste Compliance Officer on summer projects such as litter interventions
  • Coordinate (book) public education sessions, prepare resources and complete the sessions
  • Gather data on curbside participation levels for any/or materials instructed. This can include analysis of data provided by the curbside collection contractor or roadside checks directly

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment
  • Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback
  • Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset
  • Experience with MS Word, MS Outlook, MS Excel
  • Experience with public speaking and education is considered an asset
  • Valid drivers’ license and access to a vehicle

 

Anticipated Start Date: May 13, 2024

Anticipated End Date: August 23, 2024

Hourly Rate: 16.50 p/hr
