Accessibility Awareness Week: Building a More Inclusive Community

May 28, 2026

Accessibility Awareness Week takes place May 31 to June 6, 2026, with the themeDisability Justice: Stronger Together—First Voice Leading Change for Collective Action.”
This week highlights the importance of creating spaces, programs, and services that everyone can use, as we continue working toward a more inclusive community where all residents feel welcome, supported, and able to participate.

Accessible Features in Our Facilities

We’ve taken steps to improve accessibility across municipal buildings and services:

  • Power door openers are available at the main entrances of the Llyod E. Matheson Centre
  • An elevator provides access to multiple floors
  • The Finance Department is located on the ground floor for easier access to pay bills
  • Council Chambers includes:
    • A height-adjustable podium
    • A loop hearing system for individuals with hearing aids

These features help make sure that more people can comfortably access and participate in municipal services and activities.

Inclusive Programs and Recreation

  • Recreation staff are trained to deliver programs for individuals with disabilities
  • Swim programs are adapted to meet a wide range of abilities
  • Day camps offer inclusive spaces and additional supports for participants who need them

We are committed to making recreation welcoming and adaptable for everyone in our community.

Playgrounds, Parks & Trails

  • Fully accessible surface spinners at:
    • Mount Uniacke Memorial Park
    • Shubenacadie River Park
  • An Outdoor Fun Map that highlights accessible and inclusive features across parks and trails, with filters to help residents find suitable locations

At Wickwire Station Park, the EZ Launch Dock system makes it easier for individuals to safely launch and retrieve canoes and kayaks on the Shubenacadie River.

A Closer Look at the East Hants Aquatic Centre
