Aquatic Leadership Classes

The East Hants Swimming Pool offers various Aquatic Leadership programs:

Junior Lifeguard Club

The focus of this club is FUN, FITNESS and LEARNING water rescue skills.

Monday nights: 5:30 – 6:30 pm, 8-12 year olds

Starting: April 15th (10 weeks)

Cost: $65.00 for 10 weeks.

* Fee includes a three month youth membership and a pizza party during the last class!

Leaders in Training

If you’ve finished a Bronze course and are wondering what to do next, this class is for you! Participants will work on stroke improvement in preparation for teaching swimming lessons while also beginning to learn essential lifeguarding skills. For ages 12+ (with a completed Bronze Medallion or Cross course).

Tuesday nights: 6:25 – 7:25 pm

Starting: April 16th (10 weeks)

Cost: $65.00 for 10 weeks.

* Fee includes a three month youth membership and a pizza party during the last class!

Bronze Star

Participants develop problem-solving and decision-making skills as individuals and partners. A great stepping stone to Bronze Medallion!

Prerequisites: Ability is the only prerequisite, although we recommend participants be at least 10 years old. Prior training in our Canadian Swim Patrol program is an advantage.

Monday nights: 6:20 – 7:20 pm

Starting April 15th (10 weeks)

Cost: $95.00 for 10 weeks

Bronze Medallion – FREE SESSION

Bronze Medallion teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education — judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a timed swim. Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for Bronze Cross.

Prerequisites: Minimum 13 years of age or Bronze Star certification (need not be current).

Wednesdays: 3:30 – 5:30 pm

Bronze Cross – FREE SESSION

Bronze Cross is the prerequisite for all advanced training awards in lifeguarding and teaching. Bronze Cross builds on the lifesaving and fitness skills learned in Bronze Medallion and prepares students for the National Lifeguard Service Award. It is also a prerequisite for the Swim Instructor Award.

Prerequisite: Bronze Medallion

Mondays: 3:30 – 5:30 pm

Swim Instructor

The Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor course prepares the instructor to teach and evaluate the swimming strokes and related skills found in the Lifesaving Society Swim for Life program.

Prerequisite: Bronze Cross and be 15 years old

Dates: April 11, 12, 13, 14

April 11  3:30 pm – 6:30 pm
April 12 3:30 pm – 6:30 pm
April 13 9:00 am – 5:30 pm
April 14 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

Cost: $200.00

National Lifeguard Service Award with Standard First Aid

National Lifeguard Service (NLS) certification is the standard for professional lifeguards in Canada.

Prerequisite: Bronze Cross and must be 16 years old by the exam date

Lifesaving Instructor – FREE

The Lifesaving Instructor course prepares individuals to organize, plan, teach and evaluate lifesaving and first aid skills and resuscitation techniques in the Society’s lifesaving awards.

Current Lifesaving Instructors are certified to teach:

  • Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross
  • Lifesaving Fitness, Distinction

Prerequisite: Bronze Cross & Swim Instructor and be 16 years old

Swim Fit

Interested in joining a non-competitive swim team? Our certified coaches will work with you to develop your skills and strokes in a friendly environment.  The only competition is yourself!

Ages: 8-17

Prerequisite: Completion of Swimmer 6

Thursdays: 6:15 pm – 7:15 pm

Cost: $135 for 10 weeks
