NEWS RELEASE – Mount Uniacke officially opens new skatepark to community

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(MOUNT UNIACKE, NS) August 27, 2016Mt. Uniacke residents joined district councilors Saturday morning to celebrate the grand opening of a new skatepark in their area. The park was developed by the Municipality of East Hants with Federal gas tax funds and comes as a highly anticipated addition to the community.

Deputy Warden and Mt. Uniacke Councillor, Cyril MacDonald, was supportive of the recreational facility form the beginning and was happy to see the overwhelming positive response from residents.  “The skatepark in Mt. Uniacke has been extremely well received by all ages and even by skaters from across the Province,” said MacDonald. “The large number of users has caused an increased use of local convenience stores, restaurants and gas bars, making this an overall success for our community.”

On hand for a demonstration of the new facility was semi-pro scooter rider Hayden Burgess, a former East Hants resident. Burgess captivated the crowd with tricks and left many kids excited for their turn at maneuvering through the park.

“It’s very rewarding for the Municipality to see residents enjoying the benefits of a new park,” said Kate Friars, Director of Parks, Recreation & Culture, Municipality of East Hants. “As a department, we strive to leverage the recreational needs of East Hants and implement parks that speak to the needs of our communities and today we feel like we have accomplished that.”

Sportwheels Sports Excellence of Lower Sackville, NS, supported the event as a sponsor and hosted an after-party where they played games, gave out prizes and showcased skateboard, scooter and BMX equipment.
