Municipal Tax Assistance Program

Our Municipal Tax Assistance Program provides property tax assistance to households in East Hants who may be struggling to pay their property tax. Qualified applicants will receive a credit, applied directly to the tax account.

Please note that there has been a significant increase in the maximum allowable income for both 1 Adult and 2 Adult households. For the 2022/2023 taxation year, the exemption is a minimum of $237.00 or up to 20% of the applicant’s annual tax bill, whichever is the greater amount (based on a Council approved formula).

Each year, as part of the Municipal Tax Assistance Program (MTAP), the Council sets a general exemption rate in accordance with Section 69 of the Municipal Government Act. This exemption applies to taxpayers in the Municipality whose household taxable income does not exceed the limits set by Council, as outlined below and in the Municipal Tax Assistance Program Policy.

**Note that taxable income is less than total income. Many deductions such as child care, RRSP and union dues are deducted to calculate taxable income. You may qualify and not know it.

Family Size Family Taxable Income
1 adult $25,948
2 adults $31,582
1 adult + 1 child $39,280
3 persons $48,345
4 persons $58,618
5 persons $66,474
6+ persons $74,934

Applications for this exemption can be obtained from your Councillor, at the Municipal office, by mail or you can download the application form.

Proof of income, in the form of a CRA Notice of Assessment, and proof of the number of dependent children (Notice of Child Tax Benefit form the Federal Government) must accompany the application form.
