Municipal Tax Assistance Program

The Municipal Tax Assistance Program (MTAP) provides property tax assistance to qualified households in East Hants. Qualified applicants will receive a credit, applied directly to the tax account.

Proof of income, in the form of a CRA Notice of Assessment, and proof of the number of dependent children (Notice of Child Tax Benefit form the Federal Government) must accompany the application form.

For the 2024/2025 taxation year, the exemption is a minimum of $263 or up to 20% of the applicant’s annual tax bill, whichever is the greater amount (based on a Council approved formula).

Each year, Council sets a general exemption rate for the MTAP program in accordance with Section 69 of the Municipal Government Act. This exemption applies to taxpayers in the Municipality whose household taxable income does not exceed the limits set by Council, as outlined below and in the Municipal Tax Assistance Policy

**Note that taxable income is less than total income. Many deductions such as child care, RRSP and union dues are deducted to calculate taxable income. You may qualify and not know it.
