About free tax clinics

A free tax clinic is a place where eligible people can get their tax returns done for free. These clinics are hosted by community organizations across Canada through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program. In the Elmsdale area there is a drop-off service and some clinics assessable by appointment. Both services are available for 2021 returns only (no prior year returns). If you have need to do returns for prior years, talk to a volunteer in your area.

Please note that while clinics are hosted in space provided by the Municipality of East Hants, tax return services are conducted by independent volunteers authorized by Canada Revenue Agency. Other than the filing of your return, information gathered as part of this service is NOT shared with the Municipality or with CRA. Privacy of information is strictly recognized by the volunteers under the terms of service.

A two-day clinic will be held at the Lloyd E. Matheson Centre in Room 168 on April 21 and 22, 2022 with appointments available between 9am and 4pm (except 12-1pm). If you are eligible to have your return done for free (see criteria below), call 902-883-2299 and ask for an appointment.

Clients of the East Hants Family Resource Centre can also make appointments for a time and date that is convenient by calling 902-883-4349 (Only if you are an Resource Center client).

The Elmsdale Branch of the Colchester-East Hants Public Library (Lloyd E. Matheson Centre) is a drop-off and pick -up location. If you can’t make one of the in-person appointment times (see below) you can drop your income tax papers off at the library and a volunteer will do your return and you can pick your records up at the library once it is done.

Drop-off Instructions

You are eligible for help at a free tax clinic if you have a modest income and a simple tax situation.

Simple Tax Situation

In general, a tax situation is simple if an individual has no income or if their income comes from these sources:

  • employment
  • pension
  • benefits, such as Canada Pension Plan, Old Age Security, disability insurance, employment insurance, and social assistance
  • Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs)
  • support payments
  • scholarships, fellowships, bursaries, or grants
  • interest (under $1,000)

Modest Income

The following table provides a guideline to determine if an individual is eligible for the CVITP. In general, a modest income means the total family income is less than the amount shown in the chart below, based on the size of the family.

Family Size* Total Family Income
1 person $35 000
2 people $45 000
3 people $47 500
4 people $50 000
5 people $52 500
More than 5 people $52 500 plus $2 500 for each additional person
*Family size includes an individual or a couple and their dependants.

What to bring to the clinic

  • Please bring all information slips (T4s, T5s, T5007s, etc.) and receipts. If you have not received, or have lost or misplaced a slip, you may be able to get a copy by using the My Account for individuals online service or calling CRA at 1-800-959-8281 o How many people need their returns completed? How many tax years (current + prior) per person? Note: If you are booking an appointment, please book 1 appointment per return per person. Please cancel your appointment if unable to keep it. This allows someone else to book.
  • Medical expenses? Please bring all receipts and total receipts. Ask your pharmacist for printout of all your prescriptions.
  • Charitable donations? Please bring all receipts and total receipts.
  • If you plan on having a return completed for someone else, bring their personal identification information such as: date of birth, address, marital status, spouse’s name and S.I.N. If you wish to have this return filed electronically, please bring a signed note or completed T1S60 form.
  • Tuition receipts – T2202A. Students must download and print from their school. These receipts are no longer mailed out.
