Becoming a Municipal Councillor
When serving on Council, you become the voice for your community and act as a representative for the people in your area.
- Be a Canadian Citizen
- Be 18 years old at the time of nomination
- Be a resident of the municipality for a period of six months preceding Nomination Day (by March 10, 2024)
- Candidates must have municipal charges such as taxes and liens, fully paid. A certificate from the Municipality stating there are no outstanding charges will be provided and has to be filed with your nomination paper. This applies even if you do not own property or owe taxes.
- Executive Committee meetings that require 1 full day of participation a month
- Monthly Council meetings that take place in the evenings
- Extra budget meetings every new year
- Compensation every 2 weeks
Joining Council is an opportunity to have your say on infrastructure projects, planning strategies and the legacy of our community. You play a vital role in the community by listening to people’s concerns and ideas and bringing them to the rest of your council colleagues. As a part of Council, you get to learn more about the financial health of our municipality, set operating and capital budgets and weigh in on recreation assets and strategies.
Our CAO and Warden Eleanor Roulston are hosting an information session for potential candidates. If you’re interested in joining local government, this is the session to attend.

Past Election Results
The Municipality of East Hants held a Special Election for District 4 – Shubenacadie, on July 23, 2022, to fill a vacant position on Council after the resignation of Councillor Ian Knockwood in April, 2022.
Two candidates ran in this election, with the following results:
CARL MACPHEE – 168,
KENDALENE (BO) WAMBOLT – 129
Carl MacPhee is a lifelong resident of East Hants. He graduated from Acadia University with a Bachelor of Science and had a 44-year career with the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal.
This election was held electronically by the Municipality of East Hants, offering voting by telephone and internet. Voter turnout for the election was 15.3%. All candidates and voters are thanked for their involvement in this special election.
