High Speed Internet
In 2017, East Hants Municipal Council approved the direction to begin examining internet challenges in East Hants. We have explored multiple solutions since 2017, including partnership opportunities with other municipalities and organizations, and have supported a number of local groups interested in expanding internet service in East Hants.
In 2018, the provincial government created an internet funding trust to help connect more communities, homes and businesses across the province. In July, 2018, Develop Nova Scotia became the Crown Corporation responsible for developing and implementing a strategy to bring reliable, high-speed internet to rural Nova Scotia. Develop Nova Scotia has since created the Internet for Nova Scotia Initiative and in December, 2018 they announced a call to organizations interested in providing internet services in Nova Scotia to pre-qualify to bid on projects across the province. Ten pre-qualified organizations were announced in the spring of 2019. A Request for Proposals for projects that could provide connections in 6-12 months was issued in May, 2019, and closed in June, 2019. Develop Nova Scotia is now evaluating those proposals and negotiating contracts.
Another call for bids will be issued by Develop Nova Scotia in the fall of 2019, looking for solutions for longer-term projects.
East Hants will continue to support local organizations interested in providing solutions and will collaborate with Develop Nova Scotia as their process progresses.
