Internet for Nova Scotia Initiative

About

Develop Nova Scotia is the Crown Corporation responsible for developing and implementing the Internet for Nova Scotia Initiative. Once Round one and Round two projects are complete, 97% of homes and businesses in Nova Scotia will have access to high-speed internet.

The Municipality of East Hants continues to actively support Develop Nova Scotia on the Internet for Nova Scotia Initiative.

Background

The Municipality of East Hants knows that having a strong internet network will help to grow our communities and help residents and businesses thrive.

In 2017, East Hants Municipal Council approved the direction to begin examining internet challenges in East Hants. We have explored multiple solutions since 2017, including partnership opportunities with other municipalities and organizations, and have supported a number of local groups interested in expanding internet service in East Hants.

In 2018, the provincial government created a $193 million internet funding trust to help connect more communities, homes and businesses across the province. In July 2018, Develop Nova Scotia became the Crown Corporation responsible for developing and implementing a strategy to bring reliable, high-speed internet to rural Nova Scotia. Develop Nova Scotia has since created the Internet for Nova Scotia Initiative.

In December 2018, Develop Nova Scotia launched their first call for organizations to pre-qualify to bid on projects. In May of 2019, the request for proposals was issued and closed in June 2019.

Round 1 projects were announced in February 2020, and Round 2 projects were announced on September 1, 2020. For the full list of communities and project areas, please click here.

Projects must meet or exceed provincial speed targets of 50 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload for wired technologies, and 25 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload for wireless technologies. The projects must also involve ongoing investment in networks, and the ability to evolve with changing technology.

42,000 homes and businesses are expected to have access to high-speed internet under Round one, and these projects are expected to be complete by early 2021. An additional 32,000 homes and businesses will have access under Round 2, with all of these projects expected to be complete by Summer 2022.
