Business Development and Capacity Building

Program:  Export Ability Program
Agency:  Nova Scotia Business Inc.
NOTE: all provincial programs are currently under review due to the budget released in April 2015.  Please contact our Business Development Officers for assistance and specific information.
Description:  The Export Ability Program helps active and new exporters through covering up to 75% of the costs of market readiness. This program will increase your knowledge of international trade through continuing professional development, export development workshops, course materials, and exam fees.
Funding:  Up to 75% of the costs of market readiness.

 


 

Program:  Go-Ahead Program
Agency: Nova Scotia Business Inc.
NOTE: all provincial programs are currently under review due to the budget released in April 2015.  Please contact our Business Development Officers for assistance and specific information.
Description:  The Go-Ahead program covers up to 50% of the costs for follow-up market visits for those who have participated in a NS government or export agency trade initiative in the past year. Funding can cover air fare, car rental, accommodations, marketing material, and the costs of translation or interpretation.
Funding:  Up to 50% of the costs for for follow-up market visits.

 


 

Program:  Global Business Accelerator Program
Agency:  Province of Nova Scotia
NOTE: all provincial programs are currently under review due to the budget released in April 2015.  Please contact our Business Development Officers for assistance and specific information.
Description:  The GBAP provides financial support to connect companies with business experts who have experience, skills, knowledge and connections needed to grow internationally.
Funding:  Up to 80% towards the cost associated with hiring a business accelerator.

 


 

Program:  International Development Opportunities
Agency:  Nova Scotia Business Inc.

Description:  Nova Scotia Business Inc’s private sector liaison service can help your company gain access to World Bank Group business opportunities, services, and knowledge, including involvement in international financial institution-funded projects.

Program:  Workplace Innovation and Productivity Skills Incentive
Agency:  Province of Nova Scotia

Description:  WIPSI provides funding to companies to encourage them to invest in skills development and certification, adapt to new technology, improve productivity, and improve their international competitiveness.
Funding:  Up to $5000 for training and skills development.

 


 

Program:  START
Agency:  Province of Nova Scotia

Description:  START is available to businesses, Not for Profits, and social enterprises that have business locations and jobs in Nova Scotia. START focuses on small to medium sized enterprises and encourages employers to hire eligible Nova Scotians requiring work experience or apprenticeship training.

Program:  Student Employment Programs – Strategic Cooperative Education Incentive
Agency:  Province of Nova Scotia

Description:  The Strategic Cooperative Education Incentive is to help high value businesses and organization recruit and retain university and community college students for work placement by offering work experience as part of a post-secondary co-op program.
Funding:  $7.50/hour (%50 of the required minimum hourly wage of $15/hour) to a maximum of 40 hours per week.

 


 

Program:  Student Employment Programs- Student Career Skills Development Program
Agency:  Province of Nova Scotia
NOTE: all provincial programs are currently under review due to the budget released in April 2015.  Please contact our Business Development Officers for assistance and specific information.
Description:  The Students in business Program helps students start their own business in Nova Scotia by giving them start-up information and advice, mentoring, and up to $5,000 as an interest free loan.
Funding:  Positions paying $10.50/hour or more will be considered, with up to $8.50/hour of eligible work being reimbursed.

Program:  Labour Market Partnerships
Agency:  Province of Nova Scotia

Description:  The Labour Market Partnership Program funds projects that encourage employers, employee/employer associations and communities to develop and implement plans for dealing with labour force changes and human resource requirements.

Program:  Innovative Communities Fund (ICF)
Agency:  Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency
Description:  Eligible recipients include non-commercial/not-fo-profit organizations.

The purpose of ICF is to diversify and enhance the economies of Atlantic communities. ICF capitalizes on the opportunities and strengths that exist in these communities to:
  • develop competitive, productive, strategic industry sectors;
  • strengthen community infrastructure in rural communities; and
  • invest in projects that enhance communities’ capacity to overcome economic development challenges and take advantage of their strengths, assets and opportunities presented.

Program:  Atlantic Innovation Fund (AIF)
Agency:  Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency
Description:  Eligible recipients include businesses, universities, colleges or research institutions.

The AIF helps Atlantic Canadians develop and bring to market new products and services that lead to market success, help grow strategic sectors, or lead to the creation of research and commercialization partnerships.
Eligible activities include
  • development and bringing to market new products and services that meet market demands and global quality standards;
  • adapting new technology to meet business needs or respond to market opportunities; and
  • helping Atlantic Canada’s new and traditional sectors pursue opportunities, solve challenges, stay competitive and grow.

Program:  Growing Forward 2 Homegrown Success Program
Agency:  Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada
Description:  Under the Growing Forward 2 bilateral agreement, $37 million in federal and provincial funding will be invested over five years towards strategic initiative programming.Growing Forward 2 programs will focus on innovation, competitiveness and market development to ensure Canadian producers and processors have the tools and resources they need to continue to innovate and capitalize on emerging market opportunities.

Program:  Business Development Program (BDP)
Agency:  Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency
Description:  The Business Development Program (BDP) can help you start up, expand or modernize your business. Focusing on small and medium-sized enterprises, the BDP provides access to capital in the form of interest-free repayable assistance. Most business sectors are eligible except retail/wholesale, real estate, government services, and services of a personal or social nature.

Program:  Tourism Development Investment-Destination Investment
Agency:  Nova Scotia Tourism Agency
Description:  The Destination Development Program invests in the development and enhancement of tourism attractions, sites, and experiences with the aim of helping destinations create products and services that are unique to their area.

Program:  Tourism Marketing Partnership Programs-Festival and Events Marketing
Agency:  Nova Scotia Tourism Agency
Description:  The Tourism Marketing Partnership Program – Festival and Events Marketing offers support to businesses and tourism, operators for promotional activities that strengthen Nova Scotia as a tourism destination, showcase the province to visitors, increase attendance at events, and boost local and regional economies.

Program:  Tourism Marketing Partnership Programs- Tourism Experiences Marketing
Agency:  Nova Scotia Tourism Agency
Description:  The Tourism Marketing Partnership Programs – Tourism Experiences Marketing provides marketing support to the tourism industry that will help to strengthen Nova Scotia’s visibility as a tourism destination, showcase its core experiences to visitors, and increase tourism revenues in Nova Scotia.

Program:  Tourism Tour Operator Partnership Program
Agency:  Nova Scotia Tourism Agency
Description:  The Nova Scotia Tour Operator Partnership Program offers tour operators the opportunity to partner in the marketing of packaged products to the travel trade and consumers, such as direct mail campaigns, online marketing, and advertising.

Program:  NSBI Loans and Guarantees
Agency:  Nova Scotia Business Inc.
Description:  NSBI can provide financing to businesses of any size and location in Nova Scotia – whether you’re developing a new product or service, expanding export markets, or increasing production capacity. Loans can also be used for purchasing land, building equipment, and working capital.

Program:  Small Business Financing Program
Agency:  Province of Nova Scotia and Private Financial Institutions
Description:  New businesses and entrepreneurs in Nova Scotia can apply to the Small Business Financing Program for loans of up to $500,000 to start or grow a business.
Funding:  Up to $500,000.

 


 

Program:  Film and Television Industry Fund
Agency:  Nova Scotia Business Inc.

Description:  NSBI is now responsible for this important program that supports film or television industry projects that generate economic activity in Nova Scotia.

Program:  Immigrant Small Business Loan Program
Agency:  Credit Union Atlantic
Description:  Recent immigrants to Nova Scotia can borrow up to $500,000 over seven years to start, expand, or buy a small business.
Funding:  Up to $500,000 over seven years.

 


 

Program:  Payroll Rebate
Agency:  Nova Scotia Business Inc.
Description:  NSBI’s payroll rebate is a performance-based incentive offered to eligible companies expanding or locating to Nova Scotia. Available to companies that create and retain a targeted number of jobs, this rebate is paid out annually over a period not exceeding five years.

Program:  Scientific Research and Experimental Development Program
Agency:  Government of Canada
Description:  The SR&ED Program gives claimants cash refunds and / or tax credits for their expenditures on eligible R&D work done in Canada. Depending on the size and nature of your business, 20% or 35% of eligible expenses can be covered.
Funding:  Up to 35% of eligible expenses.

 


 

Program:  Innovacorp Early Stage Venture Capital
Agency:  Innovacorp (Province of Nova Scotia Venture Capital)
Description:  Innovacorp helps high potential early-stage Nova Scotia companies commercialize their technologies and succeed in the global marketplace. They’re especially interested in the clean technology, information technology, and life sciences industries. Innovacorp’s business model is an internationally recognized approach to helping technology companies grow.
