Recreation and Culture Services
The Recreation and Culture
Services Department has three main responsibility areas. First,
it advises and reports on the development and execution of policy
in the areas of leisure and tourism. Several current policies of
interest to the public would be the Special Needs Policy, Community
Grants Policy and District Recreation Funds Policy.
Secondly,
staff work with individuals and communities to provide as wide a
range as possible of recreation programs and services, as affordably
as possible. The volunteer sector is essential to the achievement
of this. Staff focus, as much as possible, on assisting volunteers.
Assistance ranges from helping groups with managing meetings, training
volunteers, leadership development, etc. to developing parks, trails,
natural areas, tourism, sports and cultural facilities and programs.
Sharing and disseminating information, and helping groups find fiscal
and human resources are other key areas.
A
third area of concentration for the Department is direct program
delivery. The Municipality operates a six lane, 25 metre indoor
Municipal Swimming Pool in Milford. The Pool offers all levels
of swim and leadership classes, recreational and family swims, aquatic
fitness and lane swims, as well as, diving, swim team, parent classes
and group rentals. For complete information, call the Pool at 758-3467.
Other
direct programs are summer day camps, outdoor swim lessons in communities
that cannot access the Pool easily, occasional special events, and
some after school activities in partnership with host communities.
This
year, East Hants is a proud partner with the Chignecto Central Regional
School Board, the Departments of Education and Health, and the Nova
Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission to pilot an Active School
Communities site. Concentration is on Hants North Rural High School
and its four feeder schools.
The Director
of Recreation and Culture Services also provides staff support to the Heritage
Advisory Committee of Council and consequently some Department resources
are directed there as well.
