On-road vehicle tires (24.5" or less) have been banned from Nova Scotia landfills since January 1996. As a result, the province has set up a provincial tire disposal program. Under this program residents may drop off up to four (4) tires at any registered tire retailer free of charge. The tires must be off the rim and free of mud and debris.
Tires can also be dropped off at the East Hants Waste Management Centre in Georgefield. Residents are not charged a tipping fee for tires which are off the rim. Businesses are charged $60 per tonne when dropping off tires.
Tires may also be retreaded for reuse. Please contact your local tire retailer to ask about retreading services. Tires for commercial vehicles are not accepted at the Waste Management Centre. Please contact your local tire retailer to discuss disposal options.
If you have further questions on tire disposal, please contact the Solid Waste Hotline at
