Illegal Dumpsite Clean-Up

The Municipality of East Hants has worked very hard to provide the tools and resources for both residents and businesses to participate in source-separation practices. Still, illegal dumpsites exist.

How would you feel if this was in the ditch by your home ...

... or in the brook that runs through your back yard?

The Municipality is focusing on cleaning up these locations and deterring any further dumping. The goal is to create a database of illegal dumpsites in the area, begin cleaning up the sites, and to increase pressure on those individuals who continue to illegally dump materials.

Once sites have been found, photographed and entered into the database, every attempt will be made to find the polluter and serve them with a clean up order. If the polluter cannot be found, the Municipal contractor will carry out clean up of the site.

Materials collected will be transported to the Waste Management Centre at Georgefield. Once at the landfill materials will be sorted. Collected materials will be properly diverted or disposed of. Many illegal dumpsites include materials that can be recycled such as household appliances and tires. Other common material that can be reused or recycled is construction and demolition debris.

The public is asked to assist us with the creation of the Illegal Dumpsite database. If you are aware of an illegal dumpsite, please contact the Solid Waste Hotline at
1-888-873-3332.
