Composting in East Hants involves using the small kitchen mini bins and the 65 gallon, green organics carts provided by the Municipality. Food waste is diverted from the waste stream by being placing into the kitchen mini bin. The mini bin is emptied into the large organics cart regularly. Carts are collected every two weeks on alternate weeks from garbage and recycling collection.

The collection trucks transport the material to the Waste Management Centre in Georgefield.

Once materials are weighed they are tipped inside the Municipal Organics Transfer Station.

Materials inside the Transfer Station are loaded onto trucks to be taken to Fundy Compost in Pleasant Valley (Brookfield area).
Processing organics includes blending food waste material with bark to create the proper carbon/nitrogen ratio. It is turned to ensure air is circulated and then placed on an outdoor clay pad for 8-12 months. Before compost is ready for consumer use it is screened to filter out any pieces of plastic that may be in the material.

And that's it. The final product is a nutrient rich, all natural, soil additive.*
