East Hants Gateway Opportunity
On Wednesday, February 25th,
East Hants Municipal Council approved a motion directing staff to study and
report to Council on the opportunity for the development of an inland port at
Milford Station. Council directed that this
be done in consultation with the residents of
Milford
and explore the benefits such a facility might bring to residents of East Hants.
An inland port is a
location, usually in a more rural area, where facilities are developed to help
with the movement of goods from one form of transportation to another (such as
from rail to truck). It is also referred to as an integrated intermodal
facility. Inland ports often attract large distribution and manufacturing companies
to the area.
This is only a concept at
this point, but it has the potential to be very rewarding for the people of East Hants.
A public information
session was held at the Milford Recreation Association Hall on Thursday, March 19. The meeting was intended to give the community a chance to learn more about the concept of an inland port in Milford Station, to talk about opportunities and challenges, and to establish a community advisory committee for the proposed project. Turnout was excellent, and table discussions resulted in a list of more than 60 questions about the proposed project. The answers to these questions are available below.
